You don’t have to give up flavor when you reduce calories. We try to offer recipes that are deliciously deceiving, using less sugar and fat to provide healthier recipes that please both family and guests. We look for recipes that are suitable for any healthy weight loss diet. With proper planning and a few ingredient substitutions, you can enjoy all of your favorite foods.
Here is one of my favorites:

Chili Burger
recipe:
1 tsp. vegetable oil
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
1 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
3/4 cup black beans, drained and rinsed
2 slices firm whole wheat bread, torn in small pieces
2 Tbsp. tomato paste
1 lb. extra lean ground beef
2 Tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro or parsley
1/2 tsp. salt (you can use less salt if your are on a salt free diet)
1/2 tsp. ground pepper
4 onion rolls, split
1 cup shredded lettuce
1 cup salsa

recipe directions
Preheat broiler or grill according to manufacturers directions. In small nonstick skillet, over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion, cooking and stir about 3 minutes or until lightly colored. Add garlic, jalapeno and cumin; cook about 1 minute more. Transfer to a dish to cool.

In a medium bowl combine beans, bread and tomato paste and mash into a rough paste. Add ground beef, cilantro, salt and pepper and the reserved onion mixture. Mix thoroughly. Shape into four 1″ thick patties. Broil or grill burgers about 5 minutes on each side or until there are no traces of pink left inside. Meanwhile, toast rolls on edge of grill or in toaster. Assemble burgers, topped with lettuce and salsa.
